Boating in Nebraska

Boating in Nebraska

Boating in Nebraska is an exercise is self-reflection, peace, and unbroken vast scenic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. Boating in Nebraska is unique in that the most prominent scenic feature is the sky and water.

Boating in Nebraska Despite the seemingly eternal flatness and scenic homogeneity of Nebraska, there are a number of watery locations in Nebraska where boating breaks up and shakes up the normal every-day-ness of grasslands and sandhills into fun and recreation. Residents who live in Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, and South Dakota all know that Lake McConaughy offers very respectable boating opportunities in Nebraska, but there are also a number of lakes in Central, Northern, and Eastern Nebraska where boaters can enjoy the great outdoors in the warmer months of spring, summer, and early fall.

Boating in Nebraska - Eastern Region
In Eastern Nebraska region, Omaha and Lincoln are the largest and most well-known cities. Lincoln, Nebraska, the capital city and home of the Huskers and the University of Nebraska, provides a variety of boating opportunities at Branched Oak, Lake Bluestem, and Holmes Lake. These are well-known boating locations within only a short drive from downtown, but a large number of other lakes near Lincoln give the boating enthusiast the opportunity to visit a new lake every weekend. Omaha, Nebraska, the largest city in the state, also has a variety of boating opportunities available to tourists and residents. Zorinsky Lake, which is situated on the Western edge of Omaha as well as Carter Lake, seated on the Eastern edge of Omaha are well-known to the city-dwellers. North of Omaha is Prairie View Lake, which is also a terrific boating location in Eastern Nebraska.

Boating in Nebraska - Northeastern Region
In Northeastern Nebraska, there are surprisingly fewer lakes that support boating activities than in Omaha and Lincoln. Near Norfolk, Skyview Lake and Maskenthine Reservoir are located only a short distance from each other, but this region contains only a smattering of lakes and boating opportunities in comparison with the rest of the state. Boating in Nebraska - North Central Region
Arnold Lake in North Central Nebraska and Valentine Mill Pond in far Northern Nebraska both are hospitable to boating. Again, this a region somewhat more sparse in terms of it’s lakes and ponds that have been made accessible to boating. However, near Valentine, the Niobrara River pacifies water-lovers with adventures in canoeing instead.

Boating in Nebraska - Central and Western Regions Along I-80, Kearney represents the near-halfway mark traveling East to West (or West to East) across the state. Lakes near Kearney include Kea Lake, Bassway Strip, Cottonmill Lake, and Blue Hole West. Lake Maloney in North Platte is regarded highly by locals as a very respectable boating location, however, Lake McConaughy, only another hour West is a major tourist destination for people from the front range in Colorado because of it’s varied offerings of water sports of all kinds, sandy beaches, and boating galore. Lake McConaughy is a surprising Nebraskan scene of beach and sand, cliffs, and water as far as the eye can see.

Boating in Nebraska As one travels along I-80 when spring starts to dawn across the plains, there is always an abundance of boats being towed to one of the great Nebraskan boating locations available in the state.
